TheSanjak of Jerusalem (Ottoman Turkish:سنجاق قدس,romanizedSancâk-ı Kudüs;Arabic:سنجق القدس,romanizedSanjaq al-Quds) was anOttomansanjak that formed part of theDamascus Eyalet for much of its existence.[1] It was created in the 16th century by theOttoman Empire following the1516–1517 Ottoman–Mamluk War.[2] It was detached from theSyrianeyalet and placed directly under theSublime Porte, the Ottoman central government, first for a brief period in 1841, and again in 1854.[3]

An independent province, theMutasarrifate of Jerusalem, was created in 1872.[4] It ceased to exist in 1917 during theGreat War as a result of British progress on theMiddle Eastern front,[5] when it became aBritish-administered occupied territory.[6]
