Jeremy Sams (born 12 January 1957) is a British theatre director,composer, and lyricist.
Sams is the son of theShakespearean scholar andmusicologistEric Sams.
He read music, French, and German atMagdalene College, Cambridge and piano atGuildhall School of Music. Early on, he worked as a freelance pianist and coach, giving frequent recitals and tours and doing stints as arepetiteur at opera houses in Brussels and Ankara.
Sams directed a revival ofMichael Frayn'sfarceNoises Off, which he mounted in London'sRoyal National Theatre in 2000. This production then transferred to theWest End, and then toBrooks Atkinson Theatre onBroadway in 2001.[1]
Among his other directing credits are the West End musicalsSpend Spend Spend (1999), the story ofViv Nicholson, who squandered a fortune won in the Britishlottery, and a stage adaptation of the filmChitty Chitty Bang Bang (2002) for both of which he receivedLaurence Olivier Award nominations; the 2002 Broadway productionAmour, which he translated from the original Frenchlibretto byDidier Van Cauwelaert. His efforts earned him twoTony Award and twoDrama Desk Award nominations. His directing credits also includeJason Carr andGary Yershon's musical ofThe Water Babies at theChichester Festival Theatre in 2003. He directed theJason Robert Brown Broadway musical13 at theBernard B. Jacobs Theatre, on Broadway.[2] He has also written and directed the stage adaptation ofThe Good Life based on theBBC TV sitcom which toured the UK in autumn 2021, and will direct a stage adaptation ofThe Lavender Hill Mob based on the1951 Ealing comedy film which will begin touring in autumn 2022.
Sams' many translations include plays byBotho Strauß;Mozart'sThe Marriage of Figaro,The Magic Flute,Puccini'sLa Boheme, andWagner'sThe Ring Cycle forENO;The Merry Widow forCovent Garden;Les Parents terribles,The Miser andMary Stuart for theRoyal National Theatre;The Threepenny Opera for theDonmar Warehouse; andWhat's in a Name? for theBirmingham Repertory Theatre.
Sams' composing credits include theBBC film ofJane Austen'sPersuasion, for which he won aBAFTA award for Best Music. Other scores includeThe Mother (2003) andEnduring Love (2004).
Sams has written, arranged, and directed music for some 50 theatre productions, includingThe Wind in the Willows andArcadia (RNT) andThe Merry Wives of Windsor (RSC).
