Jeremy P. E. Spencer is a British biochemist, specialising in nutrition and cognitive function. He isProfessor of Molecular Nutrition at theDepartment of Food and Nutritional Sciences of theUniversity of Reading.[1] He is anInstitute for Scientific Information highly-cited researcher.[2]
Spencer studiedBiochemistry at theUniversity of Warwick and completed his PhD in Medical Biochemistry/Pharmacology atKing's College London. Following several years as postdoctoral research fellow, atUC Davis andKing's College London, he became a lecturer in Biochemistry at theKing's College London GKT School of Medical Education. Since 2004, he is at the Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences at theUniversity of Reading. He has received numerous awards, including the Silver Medal of the British Nutrition Society.[3]
Spencer's research is focused on the interface between dietaryphytochemicals and brain function. His initial work focused on the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying neuronal death inParkinson's disease andAlzheimer's disease. He could show thatflavonoids and otherpolyphenols act as signalling molecules and notantioxidants in vivo.[4]
