Jeffrey Gouweleeuw (born 10 July 1991) is a Dutch professionalfootballer who plays as acentre-back for and captainsBundesliga clubFC Augsburg.[1][2]
Born inHeemskerk,[1] Gouweleeuw began his early career withADO '20 andHeerenveen, before signing a five-year contract withAZ in May 2013,[3] having received interest from the club since December 2012.[4]
In August 2015, after being made club captain at AZ, a transfer to Greek clubOlympiacos fell through.[5] He suffered an injury in December 2015, one of a number of AZ's defenders on the sidelines.[6]
In January 2016 he moved to German clubFC Augsburg.[7][8] He spoke of his joy at the move.[9] He made his debut for the club on 14 February 2016 in a 2–1 home loss toBayern Munich in the Bundesliga, coveringThomas Müller as adefensive midfielder.[10]
On 11 September 2016, he scored his first goal for Augsburg in a 2–1 victory againstWerder Bremen.[11]
Following the retirement ofDaniel Baier in September 2020, Gouweleeuw was madecaptain of Augsburg by head coachHeiko Herrlich.[12]
He has played for theNetherlands under-21 national team.[13]
