Jeffrey P. DeMunn (born April 25, 1947) is an American stage, film, and television actor known for playing Captain Esteridge inThe Hitcher (1986), Sheriff Herb Geller inThe Blob (1988),Andrei Chikatilo inCitizen X (1995), Harry Terwilliger inThe Green Mile (1999), Ernie Cole inThe Majestic (2001), Dan Miller inThe Mist (2007),Dale Horvath inThe Walking Dead (2010–2012), and Charles Rhoades Sr. inBillions (2016–2023).
DeMunn was born inBuffalo, New York, the son of Violet (née Paulus) and James DeMunn, and a stepson of actress Betty Lutes DeMunn.[1][2] He graduated fromUnion College with aBachelor of Arts inEnglish.
He moved to theUnited Kingdom in 1970, receiving theatrical training at theBristol Old Vic Theatre School. When he returned to the United States in 1972, he performed in aRoyal Shakespeare Company National Tour's production ofKing Lear andA Midsummer Night's Dream. After this he starred in severaloff-Broadway productions, includingBent,Modigliani, andA Midsummer Night's Dream. DeMunn also participated in productions of developing plays at theEugene O'Neill Theater Center.[3] In 1983 he starred in a production ofK2, which earned him aTony Award nomination. He most recently starred inDeath of a Salesman at San Diego's Old Globe Theater in 2012 andA Family For All Occasions at the Bank Street Theatre in 2013.
DeMunn is known for his collaborations with directorFrank Darabont, who has cast him in films such asThe Shawshank Redemption,The Green Mile,The Majestic andThe Mist. He also appeared in the 1988 remake ofThe Blob, which Darabont co-wrote.[4] He also narrated the audiobooks forDreamcatcher andThe Colorado Kid.[5] In 1995, he won aCableACE Award as Best Supporting Actor in a Movie or Miniseries for his portrayal ofserial killerAndrei Chikatilo in theHBO filmCitizen X and received aPrimetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie nomination.
DeMunn has made several guest appearances on series television. His extensive TV résumé includes shows such asKojak,Moonlighting,LA Law andThe West Wing. He appeared in the recurring role of Norman Rothenberg inLaw & Order andTrial by Jury. He appeared in the television miniseriesStorm of the Century.[6] He portrayedDale Horvath in Frank Darabont'stelevision adaptation of the comic book seriesThe Walking Dead, for two seasons from 2010 to 2012.[7] Upon his departure, he was cast as Hal Morrison in the 2013 television seriesMob City, which was also created by Darabont.[8]
DeMunn stars on theShowtime seriesBillions as Chuck Rhoades Sr., the wealthy father ofPaul Giamatti's Chuck Rhoades Jr.
DeMunn married Ann Sekjaer in 1974; they divorced in 1995. He married Kerry Leah in 2001.[9]
