Dr Jeevun Gurpreet Singh Sandher[1] (born September 1990)[2] is a BritishLabour Party politician who has served as themember of parliament forLoughborough since2024, gaining the seat fromJane Hunt.[3][4]

Early life

Sandher was born inLuton, Bedfordshire[5] into aBritish PunjabiSikh family with origins fromJalandhar, Punjab.[6][7]

Career

Sandher graduated with aPhD in Political Economy fromKing’s College London in 2022.[8] Prior to that he was awarded anMSc in Economic Development and Policy Analysis and aBA in Economics and Philosophy from theUniversity of Nottingham. He now leads the economics team at theNew Economics Foundation.[9] Before undertaking his doctorate, Sandher worked inSomaliland as an economist in the Ministry of Finance. He has also had roles inHM Treasury, and theDepartment for Work and Pensions, where he advised on budgeting,macroeconomic policy, inequality, poverty and social security.[8] While studying for his PhD, he co-hosted the Politics JaM podcast.[10] He was also an active member of theYoung Fabians.

Political career

Sandher was selected as theprospective parliamentary candidate for Loughborough in December 2022.[11] He won the seat at the2024 general election with an 11.8%swing from theConservatives. His majority of 4,960 votes represented an 11.7% margin of victory and a 2.1% increase in vote share forLabour.[12]

Upon enteringParliament, Sandher made hismaiden speech on 4 September 2024.[13]

Sandher was approved as a member of theTreasury Select Committee in aCommons motion on 21 October 2024.[14] Prior to this, he was appointedchair of theAll-party parliamentary groups (APPGs) concerning India[15] and Hydrogen.[16]

Politically, Sandher has been described as sitting on thesoft left of the Labour Party.[17]

Sandher is a co-sponsor ofKim Leadbeater'sTerminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill which proposes to legaliseassisted suicide.[18]

Personal life

Sandher and fellow newly electedLabour MPLouise Jones announced their engagement, shortly after his proposal on 1 December 2024.[19] He met the newNorth East Derbyshire MP in Loughborough in January 2023 when they were both still on the campaign trail.
