The riverJeetzel, which begins in theAltmark under the nameJeetze,[2] flows fromSaxony-Anhalt throughLower Saxony, inGermany. From its source near the village ofDönitz, it flows north throughBeetzendorf,Salzwedel,Wustrow,Lüchow andDannenberg, before joining the Elbe inHitzacker. Its total length is 73 kilometres (45 mi).
Aleft tributary of theElbe, the Jeetzel has itself several tributaries, including theSalzwedel Dumme and theWustrow Dumme. The name is Slavic, and meansash (tree)-stream.
Historically, when the Elbe rose too high, it would flooded the Jeetzel, which flowed "backwards" and flooded the surrounding area. Today, a system of canals prevents such flooding.
