Daniels was selectedsecond overall by theWashington Commanders in the2024 NFL draft.[64] He was the second of six quarterbacks taken in the first round, tying the1983 draft for the most in NFL history.[65] In the offseason, Daniels and former LSU teammateMalik Nabers received guidance from the league on its gambling policy for proposing a friendlyUS$10,000 bet on which of the two would earnOffensive Rookie of the Year honors.[66][67] He acquireduniform number 5 in a non-monetary arrangement withTress Way, who had worn it with the team since 2014.[68] Daniels signed his four-year rookie contract, worth$37.75 million fully guaranteed, on June 14, 2024.[69] He was named theCommanders' starting quarterback by the end oftraining camp.[70]

Daniels scored two touchdowns in his NFL debut in a loss against theTampa Bay Buccaneers; his first win occurred the following week against theNew York Giants.[71][72] In a week 3 win against theCincinnati Bengals, he earnedNFC Offensive Player of the Week honors after scoring three touchdowns and setting the NFL rookiecompletion percentage record (91.3%).[73] He was later named theOffensive Rookie of the Month for September after completing the highest percentage of passes (82.1%) over a four-game span in NFL history.[74] Daniels suffered arib fracture against theCarolina Panthers in October after two defenders landed on him at the end of a 46-yard run in the first quarter; he was later ruled out for the rest of the game.[75][76] He returned the following week against theChicago Bears and threw a 52-yardHail Mary touchdown as time expired to wide receiverNoah Brown to win 18–15.[77][78] The play, dubbed theHail Maryland, was later named theMoment of the Year at the14th NFL Honors award ceremony.[77][79] In December he became the sixth rookie in NFL history to throw five touchdowns in a game, doing so in a 36–33comeback win against thePhiladelphia Eagles.[80][81]

Daniels finished theregular season having the mostpoints per game (28.5) and highest completion percentage (69%) by a rookie in NFL history, additionally setting the NFL rookie quarterback rushing yards record (891) and the Commanders rookie passing yards record (3,568).[e][82][83][84] He also threw a rookie-record 12 touchdown passes in the fourth quarter orovertime.[85] Five of those touchdowns occurred within the final 30 seconds, the most by any player since theAFL–NFL merger in 1970.[85] The Commanders finished with a regular season record of12–5, their best since 1991, and entered the2024–25 playoffs as asixth-seed Wild Card.[86] The team broke their 19-yearpostseason win drought withroad victories over the third-seeded Buccaneers and first-seededDetroit Lions before losing to the eventualSuper Bowl LIX champion Eagles in theNFC Championship Game,[87][88][89] with Daniels recording the most passing yards (822), rushing yards (135), highestpasser rating (116.2), and highest completion percentage (69.7%)[f] by a rookie quarterback in playoff history.[90] He was named theOffensive Rookie of the Year and aPro Bowl reserve while garnering some votes for theMost Valuable Player (MVP) award,[91] with his season regarded by sportswriters and other NFL players as among the greatest by a rookie in league history.[92] Daniels ranked 21st on theNFL Top 100 Players of 2025, a seasonal list voted on by NFL players.[93]

After a season-opening win over theNew York Giants, Daniels suffered a leftknee sprain in a week 2 loss to theGreen Bay Packers that kept him out of subsequent games against theLas Vegas Raiders andAtlanta Falcons.[94] He returned in week 5 against theLos Angeles Chargers before suffering a righthamstring strain against theDallas Cowboys in week 7, leading him to miss the following game against theKansas City Chiefs.[95][96] Daniels returned against theSeattle Seahawks in week 9 before suffering adislocated left elbow on a sack late in the game.[97][98] The injury was not considered season-ending.[99] The coaching decision to keep playing Daniels down 38–7 against the Seahawks late in the fourth quarter, in which he had already taken several hits, faced criticism.[100][101] His injuries during the season drew comparisons to former Washington quarterbackRobert Griffin III, another second overall pick who had his career stunted by injuries after a promising rookie season.[102][103]
