Zakaria Khan (15 October 1915 – 2 June 1975), better known by hisstage nameJayant, was an Indian actor. He was the father of actorsAmjad Khan andImtiaz Khan. His notable works are in films likeAmar,Memdidi andNazneen. He worked in many movies withDilip Kumar,Madhubala andKishore Kumar.[1][2]
Jayant was born in Nodeh Payan (Nawan Kalli),Peshawar,North-West Frontier Province,British India on 15 October 1915 and was named Zakaria Khan.[1][3][4] He was aPashtun. He was only able to finish his elementary education. Jayant was a police officer inAlwar,Rajasthan before starting the film career.[2]
Jayant was tall and had a deep voice. He worked inVijay Bhatt's first Gujarati movieSansaar Leela (1933). The name Jayant was also given to him by director and producerVijay Bhatt. He played lead role in many movies likeBombay Mail (1935),Challenge (1936),His Highness (1937) andState Express (1938).[2]
Jayant was married and his children were film actorsAmjad Khan (ofGabbar Singh fame) andImtiaz Khan.[4] He was the grandfather ofShadaab Khan, Ahlam Khan,Seemaab Khan and Ayesha Khan and father-in-law of Shaila Khan andKrutika Desai Khan (wife of Imtiaz).
Jayant died on 2 June 1975 at age 60 in Bombay two months prior to the release of his son Amjad Khan's most successful movieSholay. He died due to throat cancer.[1] He was buried at Naupada Qabarstan of Bandra West in Mumbai.
The son of Zakaria Khan, a Pathan from the North-West Frontier Province and popular Bollywood character actor of the Fifties and Sixties (screen name Jayant), Khan was born in Bombay in 1943.
