Ravi Mohan (born 10 September 1980), better known by his former stage nameJayam Ravi, is an Indian actor, director and producer who works inTamil cinema. The son of veteran film editorA. Mohan, Ravi made his lead acting debut inJayam (2003), the success of which prompted the title to become a prefix to his stage name until 2025.[1] He has won oneTamil Nadu State Film Award and oneFilmfare Award South and threeSIIMA Awards respectively.
The success ofJayam made Ravi continue to collaborate with his brother for other films includingM. Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi (2004),Unakkum Enakkum (2006),Santhosh Subramaniam (2008) andThani Oruvan (2015). He launched his own production company, Ravi Mohan Studios, and produced various films and includingBro Code.
Ravi Mohan was born as M. Ravi inTirumangalam, Madurai.[2] His father isEditor Mohan, a Tamil,[3] while his mother Varalakshmi is Telugu fromHyderabad. His father was born as aMuslim while his mother is aHindu.[4] His elder brother,Mohan Raja, is a film director, with most of his films featuring Ravi in the lead role, while his sister, Roja, is a dentist. Ravi grew up in bothChennai andHyderabad. He completed his schooling at Jawahar Vidyalaya inAshok Nagar, Chennai. He studied dancing under theBharatnatyam dancer Nalini Balakrishnan and performed hisarangetram at the age of 12. After completing his degree inVisual Communication fromLoyola College, Chennai, he decided to get into the film industry. He also trained in acting at the Kishore Namit Kapur Institute inMumbai.[5][6] Before debuting as an actor, Ravi had been an assistant director toSuresh Krishna forAalavandhan (2001), starringKamal Haasan.[7]
Ravi acted as a child actor in three films including two Telugu films:Oru Thottil Sabadham (1989),Bava Bavamaridi (1993) andPalnati Pourusham (1993), which were all produced by his father.[2][8]
Ravi made his lead acting debut in the action-masala filmJayam, produced by his father and directed by his brotherMohan Raja. It was a remake of the 2002Telugu film of the same name. His next venture was the sentimental dramaM. Kumaran Son Of Mahalakshmi (2004), the remade version of the Telugu filmAmma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi, in which he starred alongsideAsin Thottumkal. Of Ravi's performance, a critic fromSify wrote that he "makes you want to see more of him",[9] whileThe Hindu's Malathi Rangarajan noted that he came out with an "appreciable portrayal throughout".[10] The film, considered a family entertainer, received theTamil Nadu State Film Special Award for Best Film and fetched Ravi himself theTamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor.[11] It also emerged a financial success and he changed his stage name to Jayam Ravi.[12]
His next release,Daas (2005), a romantic action,[13][14] featured him as afootball player.[15] The film took an even bigger opening than his previous ones.[16] Sify's reviewer described his performance as "impressive", calling Ravi a "hundred percent convincing as an action hero".[17]Mazhai, a remake of the Telugu filmVarsham, was his other release that year, which was "lukewarm" at the box office.[18]In 2006, he starred inSaran'sIdhaya Thirudan, which performed poorly at the box office,[19] following which, he acted inUnakkum Enakkum (initially released and promoted asSomething Something Unakkum Enakkum), again under his brother's direction in another remake of a Telugu filmNuvvostanante Nenoddantana. Ravi portrayed a rich, happy-go-luckyNRI from London, who has to live and fight for his love in dire conditions in a rural milieu.[20] The film, which featuredTrisha Krishnan alongside Ravi, became a high critical as well as financial success,[21] emerging one of the highest-grossing and most-profitable films of the year.[22][23] TheN. Linguswamy-producedDeepavali underEzhil's direction was released on 2007.[24]
In 2008, Ravi appeared in three films. Following acameo appearance inVelli Thirai, he acted in the family dramaSanthosh Subramaniam, once again under his brother's direction in a remake. In the Tamil version of the 2006 Telugu filmBommarillu, starring oppositeGenelia D'Souza, he played a young man, whose choices and wishes are continually subdued by his father.[25] Ravi received a nomination for theBest Tamil Actor Award at the56th Filmfare Awards South. Next, he starred in the action thrillerDhaam Dhoom, directed by cinematographer-directorJeeva, who died in the midst of the film's shooting in Russia.[26] Completed by Jeeva's assistant Manikandan, his wife Aneez Tanveer and his guruP. C. Sreeram,Dhaam Dhoom released in mid-2008 in which he portrayed Gautham Subramaniyam, a man accused in a murder he did not commit.[27] Sify's reviewer wrote that he was "simply amazing in his role", label the film as an "out and out Jayam Ravi movie".[27]
In 2009, Ravi starred in the action-adventure filmPeraanmai. In 2010, he starred in the action-comedyThillalangadi, a remake of the 2009 Telugu-language filmKick. In 2011, he starred in the romantic dramaEngeyum Kaadhal. In 2013, he starred in the action filmAmeerin Aadhi-Bhagavan. In 2014, he starred in the action filmNimirndhu Nil, which was also shot simultaneously in Telugu asJanda Pai Kapiraju withNani in the lead.[28]

In 2015, Ravi appeared in four films: the romantic comedyRomeo Juliet, the action-comedySakalakala Vallavan, the action-thrillerThani Oruvan (directed by his brotherMohan Raja) and the sports action filmBhooloham. In 2016, he starred in the action-horror filmMiruthan revolving around a zombie apocalypse. In 2017, he appeared in the action-thrillerBogan (reuniting with actorArvind Swami afterThani Oruvan) and the action-adventure filmVanamagan.[29]
In 2018, he starred in the sci-fi action filmTik Tik Tik (considered as India's first space film)[30] and the action-thrillerAdanga Maru.[31] In 2019, he made a cameo in the adventure filmThumbaa and starred as the lead in the comedy filmComali.[32]
After a two-year absence from the big screen, Ravi made his debut onOTT platforms with his 25th film,Bhoomi, in 2021. The film was initially supposed to release in theatres but was instead released on OTT due to theCOVID-19 pandemic in India.[33] In 2022, he was seen inMani Ratnam'sPonniyin Selvan asArulmozhivarman who later became theChola EmperorRaja Raja Chola.[34] The second part wasPonniyin Selvan: II released in 2023.[35] He appeared in the revenge filmSiren,[36] followed by the comedy drama filmBrother,[37] which was released in theatres on October 31, 2024, and digitally onZEE5 on November 29, 2024.[38]
In 2025, Ravi Mohan started his own production house named Ravi Mohan Studios.[39]It has produces and distributed a number of films and television series under the banner and has also acted in all of them. Some of these films includeBro Code,An Ordinary Man andKhaaki Squad.
Ravi married Aarthi, daughter of film producer Sujatha Vijayakumar, in 2009.[40] They have two sons, Aarav and Ayaan. Aarav appeared alongside his father in the filmTik Tik Tik (2018).[41][42] Ravi and Aarthi separated in September 2024, with Ravi filing for divorce.[43]
In January 2025, he changed his stage name to his real name, Ravi Mohan.[44][45][1] While still married, Ravi started a relationship with singer/therapist Kenisha Francis.[46]
