Jay Cassidy is an Americanfilm editor with several credits since 1978.
Cassidy began his career in the 1970s working on documentaries and political advertising.[1] He has had anotable collaboration withSean Penn, having edited all of the films directed by Penn. Early in his career, Cassidy edited the documentary filmHigh Schools (1983) that was directed byCharles Guggenheim; more recently he has edited several documentaries by Guggenheim's sonDavis Guggenheim, includingAn Inconvenient Truth (2006).
Cassidy was nominated for theAcademy Award for Best Film Editing and for anACE Eddie Award forInto the Wild (directed bySean Penn - 2007). In 2012, he was nominated for his secondAcademy Award for Best Film Editing forSilver Linings Playbook, which won the Eddie and theSatellite Award for Best Editing.[2] Cassidy was nominated for a third Academy Award forAmerican Hustle (directed byDavid O. Russell - 2013), and again won the Eddie for that film. He had won the Eddie for Best Documentary Editing forAn Inconvenient Truth (directed by Davis Guggenheim - 2006). BothHigh Schools andAn Inconvenient Truth were nominated for theAcademy Award for Best Documentary Feature, andAn Inconvenient Truth won the award.
Cassidy has been elected to membership in theAmerican Cinema Editors.[3]
Cassidy received a bachelor's degree from theUniversity of Michigan circa 1972 and was a photographer forThe Michigan Daily and theMichiganensian on campus.[4][5] In 2006, Cassidy won the 39th Cartoon Caption Contest ofThe New Yorker magazine.[6]
The Best of May, 1968, a short film directed by Cassidy in 1972, was preserved by theAcademy Film Archive in 2019.[7]
