Javier "Javi" Grillo-Marxuach (listenⓘ; born October 28, 1969, inSan Juan, Puerto Rico) is atelevisionscreenwriter andproducer, and podcaster, known for his work as writer and producer on the first two seasons of theABCtelevision seriesLost, as well as other series includingCharmed andLaw & Order: Special Victims Unit.
Grillo-Marxuach graduated fromHuron High School inAnn Arbor, Michigan. He received aBachelor of Arts (BA) in 1991 fromCarnegie Mellon.[1][2] While at CMU he was active as an actor, writer and director withScotch'n'Soda,[3] the theatrical club for non-theater majors that also countscomposer Stephen Schwartz, authorIris Rainer Dart and actorFrank Gorshin among its notable alumni. Grillo-Marxuach also wrote a weekly pop-culture column for the campus newspaper,The Tartan.[4]
He has aMaster of Fine Arts (MFA) from theUniversity of Southern California and from 2015 was sponsoring a fellowship there for MFA students who demonstrate an interest or facility with Hispanic language and culture.[5]
Grillo-Marxuach joined the crew ofLost as a supervising producer and writer for thefirst season in 2004. He returned as a supervising producer and writer for thesecond season in 2005. The writing staff won theWriters Guild of America (WGA) Award for Best Dramatic Series at theFebruary 2006 ceremony for their work on the first and second seasons.[6] The writing staff were nominated for the WGA Award for Best Dramatic Series again at theFebruary 2007 ceremony for their work on the second and third seasons.[7]
In 2006, he left theLost team,[8] and began working as a co-executive producer forMedium, as well as entering the world of comics with his ownViper Comics title,The Middleman. He also wrote the 2006Annihilation - Super-Skrulllimited series forMarvel Comics, part of the company'sAnnihilation event,[9] and theAnnihilation: Conquest - Wraith limited series for the 2007Annihilation: Conquest follow-up project.[10] He is also writer ofDynamite Entertainment's four-issue limited seriesClassic Battlestar Galactica: Cylon Apocalypse. He wroteCops On the Edge: Episode 89 (2000).
In 2008, theABC Family picked up his television seriesThe Middleman, for which he is the writer and producer. The series was not picked up for a second season due to poor ratings.
In 2010, a pilot forDepartment Zero was moved to active production by ABC.[11] The pilot is based upon work byJonathan Maberry. In 2014 and 2015, Grillo-Marxuach served as co-executive producer of theSyFy channel's seriesHelix.[12]
Grillo-Marxuach has also served as writer and producer on other series, such asThe 100,[13]The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance and most recently,From. AlongsideJose Molina, he is also the co-host of theChildren of Tendu Podcast, a weekly series offering advice for getting into the television industry.[14]
