Syed Jaaved Ahmed Jaffrey (born 4 December 1962) is an Indian actor, dancer,[2][3] producer and comedian who has appeared inHindi films and television shows. He is the son of the comedianJagdeep. He joined theAam Aadmi Party (AAP) in March 2014 and contested the2014 Indian general election from theLucknow constituency finishing fifth.[4]

Jaffrey has been awarded the life membership of International Film And Television Club of Asian Academy of Film & Television.[5] He was also the brand ambassador of the first India International Animation and Cartoon Film festival 2015.[6][7]

Early life and education

Jaffrey is the son of comedianJagdeep.[8] He was born in Bombay,Maharashtra, India (present-dayMumbai).

He participated in school dance competitions atSt. Theresa's, and later while studyingpsychology at National College (his parents discouraged him from attendingSt. Xavier's, fearing it would make him "go wild"). In 1983, he won an all-India dance competition that awarded him training at aLondon dance school, which cemented his career in dance.[9]

He married Habiba Jaffrey in 1991 and has a daughter and two sons, including actorMeezaan.

The filmMeri Jung, released in 1985, gave him his first opportunity to enact the role of a villain and showcase his dancing powers on screen.[2][10]

He won his firstIIFA Award for best comic role inSalaam Namaste in 2005.

In 2008, he played Charlie Anna in the animated filmRoadside Romeo, a collaborative effort ofYash Raj Films andDisney.

He has produced or co-produced films and documentaries such asInshallah, Football andInshallah, Kashmir.[11]

Television

The launch ofcable TV in the 1990s, particularlyChannel [V] and its irreverent sense of humour, gave him a niche to depict his brand of comedy.[12] He has been called "TVdom's first real superstar".[13]

He has also appeared in thePakistani programmeLoose Talk in the early 2000s, portraying various characters from India.

Advertising industry

He has been associated with advertising since the 1980s as an actor,copywriter and producer.[14] He has appeared in the comical Maggi Hot & Sweet Sauce commercials for 25 years.[15]

Host and judge

He has commentated on the Japanese TV showTakeshi's Castle andNinja Warrior onPogo TV andHungama respectively. He was also the judge for Karaoke World Championships India withManasi Scott, music director Raju Singh,Salim Merchant,Sulaiman Merchant, founder and organizer of KWC INDIA, Savio Paul D'sa,Leslie Lewis,Remo Fernandes, andSunita Rao.[16][17][18]

Jaffrey has hosted award shows includingFilmfare,[19] Zee Cine Awards,[20] andIIFA.[21][22]

Jaffrey hosted Big Googly onBIG 92.7FM created withParitosh Painter. He also hosted Once More, where he talks about Bollywood films from the 1970s to the 1990s in his comic style, on Epic channel since 2015.[23][24]

He anchored the showFlashback.[9] Jaffrey also anchored the song programme,Timex Timepass, in which he shifted between the caricatures of characters.[citation needed][25]

From 1996 to 2014 he hosted the dance competition showBoogie Woogie on Sony Entertainment Television Asia with his brother Naved Jaffery and friendRavi Behl.[2][26]

Political career

Jaffrey contested the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections fromLucknow as a candidate ofAam Aadmi Party but lost to BJP'sRajnath Singh. He had finished fifth in the constituency securing 41,429 votes.[27]
