Martell Robinson (born October 16, 1976), known by thestage nameJasmine Diane Masters, best known simply asJasmine Masters, is an Americandrag queen, internet celebrity, YouTuber, and stand-up comedian. He is best known for competing on theseventh season ofRuPaul's Drag Race and thefourth season ofRuPaul's Drag Race All Stars. Robinson is responsible for severalviral videos, many of which have becomememes, most notablyAnd I Oop! which was the most usedgif of 2019.

Early life

Martell Robinson[1] was born on October 16, 1976, in theSan Diego, California area.[2][3] He first performed in drag at the age of 21, in 1997, by impersonatingPatti LaBelle.[4] The drag name "Jasmine Masters" came fromJasmine Guy and her drag mother, Destiny Masters.[5] He auditioned forDrag Race beginning withSeason two.[6]

Career

Before Drag Race, Robinson appeared as the character, Mordecai, in the 2008 filmFirst Sunday.[7] He also appeared with fellowDrag Race alumnusWillam for an episode ofThe New Normal in 2013.[8]

RuPaul's Drag Race

Jasmine was announced as one of the fourteen contestants forseason seven ofRuPaul's Drag Race on March 2, 2015.[9] She was eliminated in thethird episode after lip-syncing againstKennedy Davenport, and placed 12th overall. During her time on the show, she received online death threats including racist remarks, which eventually led toRuPaul defending Masters onTwitter.[10] Masters would be referenced in 2017 byNina Bo'Nina Brown forseason nine of Drag Race, with Brown impersonating her for the annual "Snatch Game".[11]

Masters competed on theDrag Race television specialRuPaul's Drag Race Holi-slay Spectacular.[12] Masters later posted a YouTube video explaining why she wasn't featured as much as the other contestants in the special, stating thatShangela was late during one of the rehearsals, which caused Masters to become frustrated and leave the set early.[13][14]

Masters was announced to compete on thefourth season ofRuPaul's Drag Race All Stars.[15][16] She was eliminated in the first episode byTrinity the Tuck after herstand-up performance for the annual talent show, placing 10th.[17][18] She had a chance to return in sixth episode, where the eliminated queens faced off with the queens still in running, but lost a lip sync to Trinity, conclusively eliminating her from the competition.[19]

She appeared as a guest for the first challenge in the premiere ofseason eleven of Drag Race.[20]

AfterDrag Race

AfterDrag Race, she was one of thirty drag queens featured inMiley Cyrus's 2015VMA performance.[21]

Masters gained notoriety with her self-published YouTube videos on her channel. Her video "RuPaul Dragrace fucked up drag", criticizing the show's portrayal of drag, sparked criticism from fans and queens includingPhi Phi O'Hara.[22] The video was featured in Willam's internet show, "Willam's Beatdown".[23] Her video "Fix ur breath" was featured in a post onJustin Bieber's Instagram page, making Masters go viral.[24]

Because of Masters's viral success, she is the host of her own web show withWowPresents called "Jasmine Masters' Class" that premiered its first episode in 2018.[25] She also was featured as a guest in an episode ofLemme Pick You Up withTs Madison.[26] She was a guest for multiple episodes of the web series "Wait, What?" withKimora Blac.[27][28]

She was withTammie Brown,Miz Cracker,Eureka O'Hara,Shea Coulee andGinger Minj for two episodes of theBillboard web series "Spillin' The Tea" in June 2018.[29] She was withTrixie Mattel to discuss theDrag Raceseason ten contestants forAccess.[30]

Masters appeared in the music video forLatrice Royale's "Excuse the Beauty" on May 10, 2018[31] andPandora Boxx's "Oops I Think I Pooped" on September 24, 2018.[32]

Masters featured on the single "And I Oop!" byAdam Joseph in June 2019.

She is also working on a podcast calledThe Wake and Bake withHoney Davenport.[33]

Since June 4, 2023, Masters hosts her own brunch & evening drag show each week calledJush Sundays in LGBTQ event space Fluid510 inOakland, California. She invites drag race contestants and local drag queens to perform alongside her. This is the first major recurring drag show featuring TV stars in theSan Francisco Bay Area.[34]

Masters featured on the talk showVery Delta, hosted by drag queenDelta Work, on episode 63 "Do you Oop! like me?".[35]

In popular culture

A clip of Masters interrupting herself in shock, known as "And I Oop", became aninternet meme in 2019. It originated from a 2015 YouTube video named "Jasmine Masters handle your liquor".[36][37][38][39][40] According toGiphy, Masters' "And I Oop" was the most usedgif of 2019,[41] with over 419 million views.[42] Masters also trademarked the term.[43]
