Jarrod Daniel Kenny (born 17 September 1985) is a New Zealandbasketball player who last played for theHawke's Bay Hawks of the New ZealandNational Basketball League (NZNBL). He won two championships in theAustralian NBL with thePerth Wildcats in 2016 and 2017 and has represented theNew Zealand Tall Blacks multiple times.

Early life

Kenny was born inAuckland, New Zealand.[1] He attendedWestlake Boys High School.[2][3]

Professional career

Kenny made his debut in theNew Zealand NBL for theHarbour Heat in2004,[4][5][6] playing a handful of games at the end of the season.[7] He played every game and started all but two for the Heat in2005,[7] subsequently earning theNew Zealand NBL Young Player of the Year Award.[2][8] He played for the Heat until2008.[9]

Kenny joined theHawke's Bay Hawks in2009[9] and played the next seven seasons with the team.[10][11]

After a season with theNelson Giants in2016,[12][13][14][15] Kenny returned to the Hawks for the2017 season.[16][17] On 1 April 2017, he recorded 22 points and 15 assists in the Hawks' 102–91 loss to theWellington Saints.[18][19]

Kenny continued on with the Hawks in2018[20] and2019.[21]

In June 2020, Kenny was acquired by theOtago Nuggets for the2020 season.[22] In his 19th season in the league, he won his first championship[23] and earned co-Defensive Player of the Year honours alongsideIzayah Le'afa.[24]

Kenny returned to the Hawks in2021[25] and continued on in2022,[26]2023[27] and2024.[28][29]

Australian NBL and Germany

After being part of theNew Zealand Breakers squad during the2013–14 NBL season,[30][31] Kenny had a short stint with Licher BasketBären during the 2014–15 GermanProB season.[32][33]

On 1 September 2015, Kenny signed with thePerth Wildcats for the2015–16 NBL season.[34][35][36] He saw plenty of court time in his rookie season, particularly during the first half of the year withDamian Martin injured.[37] He helped the Wildcats win theNBL championship.[38]

On 11 May 2016, Kenny re-signed with the Wildcats on a three-year deal.[39] He missed time early in the2016–17 NBL season with a groin strain.[40][41][42] Despite his minutes decreasing, Kenny remained a crucial figure for the Wildcats[43] as he helped the team win back-to-back championships.[44][45]

In January of the2017–18 season, Kenny began playing in career-best form. His scoring improved by nearly six points per game, while his percentage from beyond the arc spiked by almost 30 per cent.[46] On 22 April 2018, the Wildcats parted ways with Kenny after opting not to take the club option on his contract.[47]

On 26 April 2018, Kenny signed with theCairns Taipans.[48] He played the next four seasons with the Taipans.[49][50]

National team career

In July 2009, Kenny was named in his firstNew Zealand Tall Blacks squad.[51] He made his debut at the2009 FIBA Oceania Championship.[52]

Kenny's next stints with the Tall Blacks were at the2011 FIBA Oceania Championship,[53]2012 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament,2013 FIBA Oceania Championship,2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, and2015 FIBA Oceania Championship.[53] He was ruled out of the Tall Blacks' 2016 Olympic campaign due to injury.[54][55]

Kenny's final stints with the Tall Blacks came at theFIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Asian Qualifiers and theFIBA Asia Cup 2021 Qualifiers.[56]

Personal life

Kenny is the son of Danny and Liz Kenny. His fiancé, Ailbhe Madden, is Irish.[57][58]

Kenny graduated fromAuckland University of Technology in 2009 with a physiotherapy degree.[9]

In November 2022, Kenny was appointed general manager of the Hawke's Bay Hawks.[59][60] He was named the NZNBL General Manager of the Year for the2025 season.[61]
