Jared Raab is a Canadian writer and cinematographer,[1] best known for his collaborations withMatt Johnson on the television seriesNirvanna the Band the Show and the filmsBlackBerry,Operation Avalanche, andThe Dirties.[2]

Early life and education

Originally fromMillbrook,Ontario, Raab studied film atYork University.[3]

Career

Raab made a number of short films before breaking through to wider attention with his 2011 shortThe Revenge Plot, which won the Fan Favorite award at the 2011 RBC Emerging Filmmakers Competition.[4] For a number of years thereafter he was a director of music videos[5] for artists such asBorn Ruffians,Arkells,Ohbijou,Diamond Rings,PS I Love You,Snailhouse,Young Rival andFast Romantics. He received twoPrism Prize nominations as a director of music videos, in 2017 forJuly Talk's "Picturing Love"[6] and in 2021 forAndy Shauf's "Clove Cigarette".[7]

He was cinematographer onMatt Johnson's filmsThe Dirties[8] andOperation Avalanche[9] prior to Johnson andJay McCarrol creatingNirvanna the Band the Show, for which Raab was both a cinematographer and one of the writers.

He is a two-timeCanadian Screen Award nominee for Best Writing in a Comedy Series forNirvanna the Band the Show, receiving nods at the6th Canadian Screen Awards in 2018 for "The Bean" and at the7th Canadian Screen Awards in 2019 for "The Book",[10] and a nominee for Best Direction in a Documentary Series at the10th Canadian Screen Awards in 2022 forThis Is Pop.[11]

He won the award forBest Cinematography at the12th Canadian Screen Awards in 2024, forBlackBerry.[12]

In 2025, Raab was credited as cinematographer forNirvanna the Band the Show the Movie. The film began principal photography in 2023 and premiered in 2025 atSXSW.[13]
