Jared Bush (born June 12, 1974) is an American screenwriter, producer, and director, who has served as thechief creative officer ofWalt Disney Animation Studios since 2024.[1] He is best known for co-writing and co-directing the Walt Disney Animation Studios filmZootopia (2016) and its upcoming sequelZootopia 2 (2025), writing the filmMoana (2016), its sequelMoana 2 (2024) andthe 2026 upcoming live-action remake, and writing, directing, and winning anAcademy Award for Best Animated Feature for the filmEncanto (2021), besides co-creating and executive producing theDisney XD animated seriesPenn Zero: Part-Time Hero.[2][3] Bush is a graduate of Harvard University.[4]

Career

Bush was originally hired by Walt Disney Animation Studios on a "provisional eight-week contract".[5] He joined theZootopia project early on, before it evolved from aspy film into apolice procedural; he was excited to work on a spy film because both his father and grandfather had worked for theCentral Intelligence Agency.[6] Several months after joining Disney, he had to personallypitchZootopia to Disney chief executive officerBob Iger.[5]

He went on to write the screenplays for the filmsMoana and its sequelMoana 2.[5]

Bush co-created the animated television seriesPenn Zero: Part-Time Hero.[7] In 2021, Bush directedEncanto about a Colombian magical family alongsideByron Howard withCharise Castro Smith as co-director.[8] Bush also co-wrote the screenplay alongside Castro Smith.[citation needed]

On September 19, 2024, Disney Animation announced that chief creative officerJennifer Lee was stepping down from that position to direct and writeFrozen 3 and to write and executive produceFrozen 4.[1] Bush was named as her successor.[1]
