Artistic

[edit]

Japan fielded a full squad of male and female artistic gymnasts for Paris. Five male gymnasts qualified for the games after scoring a runner-up finish in the team all-around at the2022 World Championships inLiverpool,Great Britain.[35][36] Meanwhile, the five female gymnasts qualified for the games after advancing to the final round of the team all-around at the2023 World Championships inAntwerp,Belgium, obtaining one of nine available team spots for nations not yet qualified.[37]

The five members of the men's and women's teams were announced in May 2024 after the conclusion of the NHK Trophy. For the first time in 40 years, all members named to the women's team were slated to be first-time Olympians.[38] The men's team is led byDaiki Hashimoto, the defending Olympic all-around champion.[39] In mid-July, nineteen-year-oldShoko Miyata was removed from the Japanese women's team after smoking and drinking alcohol, which are prohibited in Japan for those under 20.[40][41] Since Miyata was removed for a reason other than injury, no athlete substitution was made.[42] Thus, the women's team is anticipated to compete with only four athletes.
