National Route 20 (国道20号,Kokudō nijū-gō) is anational highway connectingTokyo andShiojiri,Nagano prefecture inJapan. Originating atNihonbashi inChūō, Tokyo, it passes throughShinjuku and four otherwards, and then seven cities, includingHachiōji in Tokyo. It follows a westward route intoKanagawa Prefecture, passing through the city ofSagamihara and one town. Continuing intoYamanashi Prefecture, the highway passes through nine cities and towns, among them theprefectural capital ofKofu. In Nagano Prefecture, National Route 20 passes through five cities and towns before enteringShiojiri, where it terminates at the intersection ofNational Routes 19 and153. The highway is 225.0 km long.[2]

National Route 20 is the successor to theKōshū Kaidō, anEdo period highway connecting theshogunal capital ofEdo and Kofu, then the principal city inKai Province (or Kōshū, as it was also known). Parts of it still bear the old name.

The highway's course passes the Sakurada Gate of theTokyo Imperial Palace.Shinjuku Station is on National Route 20. Themarathon course of theTokyo Olympics included parts of National Route 20.
