Shaik Jani Basha (born 2 July 1982), known professionally asJani Master, is an Indian dance choreographer who predominantly works inTelugu,Tamil,Kannada andHindi films. He choreographs in various dance styles, with a focus on Western and folk styles. He received aNational Film Award, threeFilmfare Awards South and threeSIIMA Awards.[1][2]
Shaik Jani Basha was born on 2 July 1982 inNellore,Andhra Pradesh.[3][4][5]
Jani began his film career as a dancer in Telugu films and onETV's Telugu dance reality showDhee. He was later given the opportunity to choreograph for 2009 Telugu filmDrona. ActorRam Charan hired him as the choreographer for 2012 Telugu filmRacha and continued to employ him for choreography in all his subsequent films. Jani has also worked as a choreographer for other actors such asPawan Kalyan,Allu Arjun,N. T. Rama Rao Jr.,Ram Pothineni andRavi Teja. He has also sung a song dedicated to Ram Charan.[6]
In 2014, Hindi actor Salman Khan appointed Jani as the choreographer forJai Ho. He also choreographs award ceremonies and continues to work on feature films.[7] He has been a choreographer and mentor on two television reality dance shows. His awards includeFilmfare Awards,CineMAA Awards andSouth Indian International Movie Awards.[5] Since 2017, he has served as a judge on Telugu television reality dance shows, includingNeethone Dance on theStar Maa.[8]
In 2018, Jani choreographed the filmMLA.[9] In the same year, he also assisted Prabhudeva on the Tamil song "Rowdy Baby" from theMaari 2. The song became a viral hit for its choreography across theIndian subcontinent and beyond.[10] In 2020, he received acclaim for his choreography of "Butta Bomma" from the Telugu filmAla Vaikunthapurramuloo. The rolling step in the music video became widely popular and was recreated by many celebrities and social media users.[11] This song also became a hit.[12] He has officially joined theJana Sena Party in January 2024,[13][14] but was later suspended from the party due to sexual harassment allegations against him.[15][16]
Jani married Ayesha, a classical dancer, and they have a son and a daughter.[17]
A complaint was registered at theRaidurgam Police Station,Hyderabad, in September 2024, against Jani for alleged sexual assault and harassment by an employee.[18] The complaint was given in a sealed cover due to the complainant being a minor (under the age of 18) at the time of the alleged crime.[19][18] He was arrested and taken into custody byTelangana Police inGoa, India on 19 September 2024.[20] On 24 October 2024,Telangana High Court granted him bail.[21][22][23]
