Janella Maxine Desiderio Salvador (Tagalog:[dʒaˈnɛlɐ]; born March 30, 1998) is a Filipino actress and singer. Debuting in the hit morning dramaBe Careful with My Heart (2012–2014), she followed with lead roles inOh My G! (2015),Born for You (2016),So Connected (2018),The Killer Bride (2019–2020),Darna (2022–2023) asMars RavelosupervillainValentina, andUnder Parallel Skies (2024). Her awards include threePMPC Star Awards, aFAMAS Award andPrincess of Philippine Television.

Early life

Janella Salvador was born inCebu and raised inSan Juan inMetro Manila.[2]

Her parents areWest End musical actress Jenine Desiderio and Juan Miguel Salvador, songwriter[3][4] and former lead singer of Rage Band.[5]

She has a half-brother and two step siblings.[6]

Career

2008–2014: Early years, debut

Salvador has expressed interest in performing arts at a young age.[7]

Between 2008 and 2009, she represented the Philippines in a world trade fair inSeoul, Korea. She appeared on stage in venues such asMeralco Theater, her first lead role being the school musicalPaul! Paul![8] After guesting onEat Bulaga'sSa Pula Sa Puti (then-airing onGMA Network), management directors Manny Valera andStar Magic'sJohnny Manahan signed her a contract as their talent.[9]

Her official acting debut came in 2012 through the hitdaytime drama,Be Careful With My Heart, which aired until 2014.[10][11][12] Salvador's character, middle daughter Nikki Grace Lim, was widely known for herTaglishcatchphrases.[13] Winning newcomer awards, she would become one of the youngest faces ofGarnier skin care.[14] In 2013, she was officially launched as part ofStar Magic Circle 2013.[15] Salvador signed film contracts withRegal Entertainment andStar Cinema, both in 2014.[16][17]

2015–present: Lead roles and music

ABS-CBN in 2015 cast Salvador in her first leading role inOh My G! as an orphan who blames God for the trials in her life.[18] On July 1, Salvador released herdebut album, which eventually becamecertified platinum byPARI.[19][20][21] After being selected to interpret the theme song "Happily Ever After" forHong Kong Disneyland's 10th anniversary,[22] she made her film debut in directorJun Lana'sHaunted Mansion. The film was a top grosser at the41st Metro Manila Film Festival and won Salvador theNew Actress of the Year.[23]

In 2016, she had her second major lead TV role through the music-based dramaBorn for You withElmo Magalona. Salvador portrays an aspiring musician who studies and works inTokyo.[24] In the soundtrack, she released her first Japanese language songs.[25] Salvador was announced to work withDisney a third time following her Disney in Concert,Kia Theatre performance with a Philippine exclusive version ofMoana's "How Far I'll Go".[26][27]

2017 came her first solo concert Super Janella.[28] The same year, Salvador would appear inTopel Lee's ensemble filmBloody Crayons. It was announced Salvador would be cast incrime dramaThe Good Son (formerlyKung Kailangan Mo Ako) but following major script changes, announced she would step down from the role.[29] She then accepted to join Himig Handog a third time through the Karlo Zabala penned song "Wow Na Feelings" which won 4th Best Song andTFC's Global Choice Award.[30][31] By 2018, she headlined two films. Following a portrayal as a singingmermaid infantasy filmMy Fairy Tail Love Story, she would garner praise as a love-struck waitress in directorJason Paul Laxamana's rom-comSo Connected.

In 2019, Salvador returned to the small screen after three years throughgothic thrillerThe Killer Bride. Her role as Emma, amortuarycosmetologist who becomes possessed by the town's spirit won her Princess of Philippine Television at the nationalBox Office Entertainment Awards.[32] By year end, Salvador starred opposite veteran actressMaricel Soriano in filmThe Heiress, which was based on the Philippinebarang folklore.[33] In 2020 she appeared inTren, the second highest rating episode ofMaalaala Mo Kaya for the year. She played Aira, a university student who reconciles with her past lover.[34][35]

On November 19, 2021, she was confirmed assupervillainValentina / Regina Vanguardia inMars Ravelo'sDarna, to be directed byChito S. Roño. After months of stunt training, the series premiered in August 2022 and concluded February 2023.[36][37][38] Her supporting role inDerick Cabrido's 2023 filmMallari gained her aMetro Manila Film Festival Award for Best Supporting Actress nomination.

In July 2023, she also concludedprincipal photography in Hong Kong for the internationalromance filmUnder Parallel Skies. She stars opposite Thai actorWin Metawin, with direction byKita Kita directorSigrid Andrea Bernardo. It had its world premiere at the17th Asian Film Awards, its nationwide theatrical release in thePhilippines on April 17,Singapore on May, 1 andThailand on May 9, 2024, as well as limited screening in Laos, Cambodia, UAE and Vietnam.[39] Salvador had her third exclusive contract withABS-CBN on February 23, 2024, marking 12 years with the network.[40][41] ForPride Month 2024, Salvador released a music video for her songHey You that features asapphic romantic storyline.[42][43] Extended screenings forUnder Parallel Skies lasted until October 2024 in Japan.[44]

In 2025, she appeared in her first indie film,Fleeting, for CinePanalo 2025.[45] She is slated for the upcoming non-romance series,What Lies Beneath.

Personal life

She was previously in a relationship withFilipino-British actorMarkus Paterson.[46]

On October 20, 2020, she gave birth to their son Jude inBath, Somerset, England.[47][48]
