Jane Toshiko Nishida (born April 26, 1955) is an American lawyer and government official. She served as the assistant administrator in the Office of International and Tribal Affairs of theU.S. Environmental Protection Agency[2] during thepresidency of Joe Biden. Nishida served as the actingAdministrator of the Environmental Protection Agency from January 20 to March 11, 2021,[3] and again from January 1 to January 20, 2025. Nishida also served as acting DeputyAdministrator of the Environmental Protection Agency from October 5 to December 31, 2024.[4]
Nishida was born inBethesda, Maryland on April 26, 1955. She earned a B.A. in international relations fromLewis & Clark College in 1977, and aJ.D. fromGeorgetown University Law Center in 1980.[5]
Nishida was a counsel in theMaryland General Assembly during 1981–1984, and then worked in the Governor's Legislative Office until 1991. She was then the Executive Director of theChesapeake Bay Foundation during 1991–1995. Nishida wasMaryland Secretary of the Environment from March 27, 1995, to April 26, 2002.[5] Nishida then became a senior environmental specialist atThe World Bank. She began working for the EPA in 2011.[6]
