Jan Marinus Domela (August 22, 1894 inThe Hague – August 1, 1973 inSanta Monica, California [ 1] ) was an American artist and illustrator.
Johan Domela Nieuwenhuis ,[ 2] alsoJan Marinus Domela [ 3] became interested in art while at boarding school inSwitzerland .[ 3] While visiting his sister in California he studied at the Los Angeles School of Illustration and Painting and theMark Hopkins Art Institute ; back in the Netherlands in 1925, he attended theRijksakademie in Amsterdam before completing his studies at theAcadémie Julian in Paris.[ 3]
After returning to California in 1928 Dolema was made the chief matte painter atParamount Studios , and was chief artist in the special effects department until 1968.[ 3] Creating landscapes for most of the movies produced by Paramount for over thirty years, he received severalAcademy Awards for his work.[ 3]
Domela was part of the production team who received anAcademy Honorary Award at the11th Academy Awards for their efforts on the Paramount filmSpawn of the North .[ 4] Domela exhibited his ownlandscape paintings of subjects such as theMonterey Peninsula , theCalifornia Sierras , theAlps , andMonhegan Island , at venues including theLos Angeles County Museum .[ 3]
