Jamuna (30 August 1936 – 27 January 2023;née Nippani ) was an Indian actress, director, and politician who appeared mainly inTelugu cinema .[ 1] She made her acting debut at age 16 in Dr. Garikapati Rajarao'sPuttillu (1953),[ 2] and received her breakthrough withL. V. Prasad 's Missamma (1955). Her filmography also includes Tamil, Kannada, and Hindi films.[ 3] She won aFilmfare Award and an award atFilmfare Awards South . She was amember of parliament in the9th Lok Sabha (1989–1991) representing theRajahmundry constituency .
Jamuna was born inHampi in present-dayKarnataka in aKannadiga family.[ 4] [ 5] [ 6] [ 7] Her parents were Nippani Srinivasa Rao and Kowsalya Devi. She first was named Jana Bai. Her father was a Madhva Brahmin, while her mother was aVaisya , resulting in aninter-caste love marriage . Jamuna grew up inDuggirala , in theGuntur district ofAndhra Pradesh .[ 2] Her father was involved in the business ofturmeric andtobacco and their family moved there when she was seven years old.[ 4] WhenSavitri was performing drama in Duggirala, she would stay at Jamuna's house. Later, Savitri invited Jamuna to act in films. She began performing as heroines in movies at the age of 16.[ 2] [ 4] [ 8]
Jamuna was a stage artist in school. Her mother taught her vocal music andharmonium . In 1952, Dr. Garikipati Raja Rao of the Indian People's Theatre Association saw her stage showMaa Bhoomi and offered her a role in his filmPuttillu. [ 2]
Jamuna acted in 198 films inTelugu and other south Indian languages. She also acted in Hindi films, winning theFilmfare Best Supporting Actress Award forMilan (1967), repeating her role from the originalTelugu filmMooga Manasulu (1964).
Jamuna also established the Telugu artist association and provided social services through it for 25 years.[ 9]
Jamuna joined theCongress party in the 1980s and was elected to theLok Sabha from theRajahmundry constituency in 1989.[ 10] She lost the 1991 election and quit politics, but briefly campaigned for theBJP in the late 1990s duringAtal Bihari Vajpayee 's tenure.[ 11]
Personal life and death [ edit ] In 1965 Jamuna married Juluri Ramana Rao, a zoology professor atOsmania University ; he died from cardiac arrest on 10 November 2014 at age 86. They had a son,Vamsee Juluri and a daughter,Sravanthi Juluri , and lived inHyderabad ,Telangana , India.
Jamuna died at her home inHyderabad on 27 January 2023, at age 86.[ 12] [ 13]
