James Lawrence Getz (September 14, 1821 – December 25, 1891) was an American newspaperman and politician who served three terms as aDemocratic member of theU.S. House of Representatives fromPennsylvania from 1867 to 1873.
James L. Getz was born inReading, Pennsylvania. He pursued an academic course, and was one of the founders of theReading Gazette in 1840.
He purchased theJeffersonian Democrat and merged the two papers under the name of theReading Gazette and Democrat, disposing of his interests in 1868. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1846 but never practiced.
He was a member of thePennsylvania State House of Representatives in 1856 and 1857 and served asSpeaker of the House during the latter year.
Getz was elected as a Democrat to theFortieth,Forty-first, andForty-second Congresses. He was not a candidate for renomination in1872.
After leaving Congress, he again engaged in the newspaper business. He served as citycomptroller of Reading from 1888 until his death there in 1891.
He is interred in Reading'sCharles Evans Cemetery.
