Jacob Stacey Schreier (born September 29, 1981)[1] is an American director. He was a founding member ofWaverly Films, aBrooklyn-based filmmaking collective, and joined Park Pictures in 2006, releasing his first feature filmRobot & Frank in 2012. In 2015, he releasedPaper Towns, an adaptation of the2008 novel of the same name byJohn Green, and directed the 2025Marvel Studios superhero filmThunderbolts*.

Early life

Born inBerkeley, California, Jake Schreier attended theNew York University Tisch School of the Arts. After graduating, he directed music videos, including one forFrancis and the Lights, a performer/songwriter with whom Schreier also playedkeyboard for several years.[2] He also directed commercials for products such asAbsolut Vodka andVerizon phones.[3] Together with his friends from college, he co-founded the film collectiveWaverly Films and continued to collaborate on film projects for television and the web.

Film career

In 2006, Schreier signed with Park Pictures, a commercial and filmproduction company, and worked on a number ofadvertising campaigns and commercials; he was noted for his work and appeared in the “Best New Directors” list ofCreativity Magazine and other advertising industry magazines. In 2012, he released his first feature film,Robot & Frank, based on the screenplay by his Tisch classmate and friend Christopher Ford.[3][4] The film won theAlfred P. Sloan Prize at theSundance Film Festival, for best feature film that focuses on science or technology as a theme, tying with theKashmiri filmValley of Saints.[5]Robot & Frank earned Schreier critical acclaim for his feature directorial debut.Los Angeles Times film critic Kenneth Turan called it "exceptionally polished for a first-time effort",[6] andRolling Stone gave it three out of four stars.[7] He also directed thefilm adaptation of theJohn Green book,Paper Towns,[8] which was released on July 24, 2015.[9]

In 2021, frequent collaboratorChance the Rapper releasedMagnificent Coloring World, a concert film made from special performance footage Schrier directed in 2016. An internationaldistribution agreement withAMC Theatres and Park Pictures for the film was made, marking the first time an individual recording artist has distributed a film exclusively through AMC.[10]

In June 2022, Schreier was hired to direct theMarvel Studios superheroMarvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) filmThunderbolts*.[11] The film received generally positive reviews.[12]

In 2025, a week after the release ofThunderbolts*, Schreier became the top choice to direct anX-Men film for Marvel Studios.[13] On July 20, 2025, Schreier was officially confirmed as the film's director.[14]
