Jacob Samuel Brown (born 10 April 1998) is a professionalfootballer who plays as aforward,winger orwing-back forEFL Championship clubPortsmouth, on loan fromEFL League One clubLuton Town, and theScotland national team.[3][2]
Brown started his career withBarnsley, making his professional debut in October 2016. After spending time out on loan atChesterfield in2017–18, he broke into the first team atOakwell, helping them gain promotion to the Championship in2018–19. In September 2020 he joined Stoke City for an undisclosed fee. Brown spent three seasons with Stoke before joiningLuton Town in August 2023.
Born and raised in England, Brown was selected by the Scotland national team in November 2021,[4] being eligible via hisGlaswegian mother.[5]
Brown began his career at theSheffield Wednesday Academy where he was released at the age of 14.[6] He signed forGuiseley at the age of 16 and played in his first senior match againstSelby Town in theWest Riding County Cup in October 2014.[7] Brown moved toBarnsley in January 2015 after impressing playing against them in an under-18 match.[7] Brown made his debut for Barnsley againstBrentford on 22 October 2016, coming on as a late substitute.[7] After spending the first half of the 2017–18 season with Barnsley under-23s, Brown joined League Two sideChesterfield on a six-month loan on 31 January 2018.[8] Brown played 13 times for the Spireites in2017–18 and was unable to help them avoid relegation to the National League.[6]
Brown broke into the first team atOakwell in2018–19 underDaniel Stendel and impressed playing as a winger and won theEFL Young Player of the Month award for January 2019.[9] He signed a new contract in December 2018.[10] He was sent-off for the first time in his career againstSouthend United on 2 March 2019.[11] Brown played 38 times in 2018–19, scoring eight goals as the Tykes gained promotion back to the Championship.[12] Brown signed a contract extension with Barnsley in May 2019.[13] In2019–20, Brown provided nine assists as Barnsley battled against relegation and stayed up after winning their final two matches againstNottingham Forest andBrentford.[14][15]
Brown joinedStoke City on 9 September 2020 for an undisclosed fee.[16][17] He scored his first goal for Stoke in a 1–0EFL Cup win againstWolverhampton Wanderers on 17 September 2020,[18] and his first league goal in a 3–0 win againstReading in November.[19] Brown scored six goals in 46 appearances during the2020–21 season, as Stoke finished in 14th position.[20][21][22] He scored on the opening day of the2021–22 season in a 3–2 win againstReading.[23] Stoke began the season in good form and were in play-off contention at the turn of the year but a poor second half saw the team slip down into mid-table.[24] Brown was top scorer with 14 goals which earned him a new three-year contract and saw him namedPlayer of the Year.[25][26] In the2022–23 season, Brown scored nine goals in 42 appearances as Stoke finished in 16th.[27] He missed the last few matches of the campaign after sustaining a hamstring injury.[28]
Brown joined newly promotedPremier League sideLuton Town on 10 August 2023 for an undisclosed fee.[29] On 29 August 2023, Brown scored his first goal for the club in a 3–2 victory overGillingham in the EFL Cup.[30] On 25 November 2023, Brown scored his first regular season goal for Luton Town and the winning goal againstCrystal Palace in a 2–1 win atKenilworth Road, the club's first home Premier League victory.[31]
Brown was eligible to play international football for bothEngland andScotland, being eligible for the latter through hisGlasgow-born mother.[32] In November 2021, Brown was selected by Scotland forWorld Cup qualifying matches againstMoldova andDenmark.[4] Brown made his senior international debut for Scotland on 12 November 2021, appearing as a late substitute in a 2–0 win againstMoldova.[33]
