JMT Records (an acronym ofJazz Music Today) was a Germanrecord label founded by Stefan Winter. It was based inMunich, Germany, specialized in contemporaryjazz, and operated from 1985 until 1995.[1]

History

[edit]

JMT released debut albums bySteve Coleman,Greg Osby,Cassandra Wilson,Jean-Paul Bourelly, andRobin Eubanks and also released early albums byGary Thomas helping to define theM-Base concept.[2] The label also produced early recordings of musicians associated with the New York downtown scene includingMark Feldman,Mark Dresser,Hank Roberts,Tim Berne,Uri Caine andJoey Baron. Other jazz musicians who recorded for JMT includedHerb Robertson,Bob Stewart, andCraig Harris. European musicians such asDjango Bates,Marc Ducret, and Peter Herborn were also part of the label's portfolio.

One of the most successful releases on JMT wasJohn McLaughlin'sLive at the Royal Festival Hall withTrilok Gurtu andKai Eckhardt which reached number 3 in theBillboard Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart.[3] Drummer and composerPaul Motian released eleven albums between 1988 and 1995 on the JMT label including many with his trio featuringJoe Lovano andBill Frisell.

In 1995, JMT was fully absorbed intoPolyGram, which deleted most of the label's back catalogue. One of the label's artists,Tim Berne, stated that the majority of his work vanished.[1]

In 1997, Stefan Winter establishedWinter & Winter Records and gradually re-released the JMT catalogue through the new label.
