Josie Totah[1] (born 2001 or 2002[2]), formerly known asJ. J. Totah,[3][4] is an American actress. She is known for her recurring role on theDisney Channel seriesJessie and a supporting role on the 2013ABC comedy seriesBack in the Game. She received praise from critics for her role in the 2016 filmOther People. In 2018, she starred in the short-livedNBC comedy seriesChampions.Totah starred as Lexi inthe 2020 revival ofSaved by the Bell, which ran for two seasons.

Totah began her career playing male roles. She publiclycame out as a trans woman in August 2018, changing her first name to Josie.[5]

Early life

Totah is the third child of Suheil and Christine Totah. She has a sister and brother; she is ofPalestinian andLebanese ancestry.[2]

Career

Josie Totah began her acting career in 2012 when she was cast as the "Lil' Dictator" in the first production forAwesomenessTV.[6] Beginning in 2013 she portrayed Stuart Wooten, a boy with a crush on series regularSkai Jackson (Zuri Ross), in theDisney Channel Original SeriesJessie.[7] Totah has guest starred on the TV showsNew Girl,2 Broke Girls, andLiv and Maddie.

Also in 2013, Totah was cast in a supporting role in theABC comedyBack in the Game. In the same year, she and her mother appeared in an episode ofFamily Game Night.[8] In 2015, she was cast inthe sixth seasonGlee as the youngest member ever of theNew Directions, which she played in four episodes.[9] In 2016, Totah appeared in the filmOther People, and received critical praise for her role withVariety, making her one of its Sundance Breakout Stars of the year.[10][11][12] In October 2016,Deadline Hollywood reported that Totah would star in a new comedy forNBC which she helped develop where Totah was set to produce alongside executive producersAdam and Naomi Scott.[13] In 2017, she appeared in theNetflix detective comedyHandsome: A Netflix Mystery Movie and the Marvel Studios filmSpider-Man: Homecoming.

In January 2017, Totah joinedAdam Devine in the Disney feature filmMagic Camp.[14][15] In February 2017, Totah was cast as Michael Patel, the son ofMindy Kaling's character, Priya Patel, in the newNBC comedyChampions,[16] which was picked up to series in May 2017,[17] and aired from March 8 to May 25, 2018, before being canceled.[18] Totah was cast in aSaved by the Bellreboot for NBC's streaming servicePeacock, where she played the character of Lexi, a socially powerful cheerleader.[19]

In August 2022, she started a podcast titledDare We Say with Yasmine Hamady andSaved by the Bell co-starAlycia Pascual-Peña.[20]

Personal life

She attended a Catholic school growing up. She considers herself "semi-religious".[1]

On August 20, 2018, Totah wrote an article published inTime magazine in which she came out as atransgender woman.[1]

Totah attendedChapman University, graduating in 2022. She was a member of asorority.[21]
