Jon Robert "J.R."Holden (Russian:Джон Ро́берт Хо́лден; born August 10, 1976) is an American-Russian former professionalbasketball player and current basketball executive who is serving as a front office executive of theDetroit Pistons in theNational Basketball Association (NBA). He was previously the director of player personal of theBrooklyn Nets. Holden was born inPittsburgh, Pennsylvania. At 1.85 m (6'1") tall, he could play at both thepoint guard andshooting guard positions, but he primarily played at point guard.
As a member ofCSKA Moscow, Holden won twoEuroLeague titles, in 2006 and 2008. Moreover, he reached eight consecutiveEuroLeague Final Four tournaments, a record he shares with his former CSKA teammate,Theo Papaloukas. His consistency at the highest level of European basketball earned him a selection to theEuroLeague 2000–2010 All-Decade Team.
He was also a member of the senior men'sRussian national basketball team, which he helped lead to theFIBA EuroBasket title in2007, Russia's first ever gold medal in the tournament.
Holden attended and played high school basketballWilkinsburg High School, inWilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, and atLinsly School, inWheeling, West Virginia.
After high school, Holden playedNCAA Division Icollege basketball atBucknell University, with theBucknell Bison, from 1994 to 1998.
After graduation fromBucknell, Holden received a call from the basketball clubASK/Brocēni/LMT, located inRiga,Latvia, offering him $3,000net income a month to join their team. He accepted, and began a long and very successful career in European basketball.[1]
Holden played for teams in: theLatvian League (ASK/Brocēni/LMT 1998–99), theBelgian League (Telindus Oostende 1999–01), theGreek Basket League (AEK Athens 2001–02) and theRussian Superleague A (CSKA Moscow 2002–2011).[2] He won national championships in each country. He was named the 2003 Russian Superleague A Player of the Year by the websiteEurobasket.com. He also earned an Import Players Honorable Mention in the 2002Eurobasket.com website's All-Europe Rankings.[3] Holden won theEuroLeague 2005–06 and theEuroLeague 2007–08 season championships withCSKA.
Holden started forCSKA Moscow against thePhiladelphia 76ers in an exhibition game in October 2006, inCologne,Germany, as part of theEA SportsNBA Europe Live 2006 promotional event.[4]
Holden's biggest achievement came in theFIBA EuroBasket 2007 final game againstSpain, where with 2 seconds left in the game he scored the winning shot that gaveRussia the championship. He was also named to the Russian squad for the2008 Beijing Olympicsmen's basketball tournament.
After he retired from playing professional basketball, Holden became ascout, for theNBA'sDetroit Pistons and thePhiladelphia 76ers.[5]He is currently the Director of Player Personnel for the Brooklyn Nets of the NBA.
On October 20, 2003, Holden became a Russiancitizen by decree ofPresidentVladimir Putin. This move was brought about by newRussian Basketball Federation regulations restricting the number of foreigners, and specifically Americans allowable on Russian League teams. In response to the move, CSKA Basketball CEOSergei Kushchenko hatched the idea of Holden acquiring citizenship.Moscow mayorYury Luzhkov and the Russian State Sports Committee both wrote letters in support of the decree. Holden currently maintains dual American and Russian citizenship.[1]
In a September 2012 interview Holden stated thatDušan Ivković is one of the best coaches ever.[6]
Jon is married to Aireka Holden. They reside in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. They have a daughter and son.
