József Zakariás (25 March 1924 – 22 November 1971) was a Hungarianfootballer andmanager. During the 1950s, he was a member of the legendaryHungary team known as theMighty Magyars. Other members of the team includedNándor Hidegkuti,Ferenc Puskás,Zoltán Czibor,Sándor Kocsis andJózsef Bozsik.

MTK Hungária FC

Zakariás was born and died inBudapest and spent the peak of his career atMTK Hungária FC. However while he was with the club they were known asBástya SE and thenVörös Lobogó SE. Under coachMárton Bukovi and with a team that also includedNándor Hidegkuti,Péter Palotás andMihály Lantos, Zakariás helped MTK win twoNemzeti Bajnokság I titles, aMagyar Kupa and aMitropa Cup.

Hungarian International

Between 1947 and 1954, Zakariás won 35 caps forHungary. As one of the legendaryMighty Magyars, he helpedHungary becomeOlympic Champions in 1952,[1]Central European Champions in 1953 and defeatedEngland twice. He then helped Hungary reach the1954 World Cup final. During theWorld Cup finals he played in four of the five games Hungary played in. He allegedly broke a curfew before thefinal, spending the previous night with a hotel maid. Zakariás never played for Hungary again.
