Járnsaxa (/jɑːrnˈsæksə/;Old Norse:[ˈjɑːrnˌsɑksɑ]; means: "irondagger") is ajötunn inNorse mythology. InProse Edda ofSnorri Sturluson, she is portrayed as the lover ofThor, the mother ofMagni and the possible mother ofMóði.[1]

Name

[edit]

TheOld Norse nameJárnsaxa has been translated as 'irondagger',[2] or 'armed with an iron sword'.[1]

Attestations

[edit]

InHyndluljóð, Járnsaxa is named as one of theNine Mothers of Heimdallr.[1]

InSkáldskaparmál, Thor's wife the goddessSif is either herself called "Járnsaxa" or called by akenning meaning "the rival of Járnsaxa",[3] throwing confusion on whether Sif is or is not distinct from Járnsaxa the mother ofMagni.[4] At the end of the story,Odin argues that Thor did wrong to offer the splendid horseGullfaxi to Magni, the son of a giantess, rather than to himself, the father of Thor.[1]
