TheIzium Trail orIzium Warpath (Ukrainian:Ізюмський шлях,Russian:Изюмский шлях) was a historic route used by the Crimean Nogays in the 16th and 17th centuries. It branched off theMuravsky Trail at the upper reaches of theOril river and, after crossing theSeversky Donets at a convenient ford nearIzium, continued north along theOskil river.[1] It allowed the invaders to penetrate intoSloboda Ukraine and then invadeMuscovite Russia.[citation needed] In the mid-17th century, the route fell into disuse after the construction of fortifications in the area like theBelgorod line [ru] and theIzium line [uk].[1]
