Ivanna Anatoliyivna Sakhno (Ukrainian:Іванна Анатоліївна Сахно; born 14 November 1997) is a Ukrainian actress and activist based in theUnited States. She is known for her roles as Cadet Viktoriya in the science fiction monster filmPacific Rim Uprising (2018); the hitwoman Nadedja in the 2018 action comedy filmThe Spy Who Dumped Me; and Shin Hati in 2023'sAhsoka television series. She had already achieved certain prominence inUkraine after appearing in 2005 in the first ever Ukrainian-language sitcom,Lesia + Roma, and the 2013 biopicIvan the Powerful.
Ivanna Sakhno was born inKyiv,Ukraine, on 14 November 1997 to a family of local filmmakers.[1] Her parents areHalyna Kuvivchak-Sakhno [uk], a director, and Anatolii Sakhno, a cinematographer.[2]
Her dream of acting started in 2004 when she watched the filmAmélie.[1] At the age of 13, Ivanna Sakhno left Ukraine to study English inVancouver. It was there she was discovered by Janet Hirshenson andJane Jenkins at a casting workshop. Sakhno moved to the United States in 2013, settling in Hollywood to pursue an acting career. While there she studied atBeverly Hills High School and later at theLee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, working withIvana Chubbuck.[3]
Sakhno's first television appearance was in the 2005 seriesLesya + Roma[4] (a Ukrainian adaptation of the successful Canadian sitcomUn gars, une fille) and her debut feature film role was as "Milka" in the 2013 biopic film,Ivan the Powerful.
Her first major Hollywood role was in Thomas Dunn's 2016 thriller filmThe Body Tree.[5] She followed this with roles in two big budget 2018 releases,Pacific Rim Uprising[6][7] andThe Spy Who Dumped Me.[8][9]
In 2019, Sakhno was a member of the jury of the International Competition Program of the 10thOdesa International Film Festival.[10] In August 2020, she was a member of the jury of the 49thMolodist Film Festival.[4]
In 2020, she made her first appearance in an American television series when she performed oppositeZoë Kravitz in theHulu seriesHigh Fidelity.[11] In the same year she starred in the thriller filmLet it Snow, directed by Ukrainian filmmaker Stanislav Kapralov.[12][13] She also appeared in the 2022 French limited seriesThe Reunion (La jeune fille et la nuit).[14]
In November 2021, she was cast in theDisney+ seriesAhsoka, which is part of theStar Wars franchise.[15]
At the2015 Cannes Film Festival, Sakhno expressed her support for Ukrainian political prisoners held byRussian authorities.[3]
Following theRussian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, Sakhno publicly condemned Russia’s actions and supported her country. In February 2023, she spoke at The Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. in support of Ukraine. In April, Sakhno discussed theRusso-Ukrainian War onMorning Joe and how Americans can help affected Ukrainians.[16] She also was a participant in the Artists for Ukraine fundraising event showcasing Ukrainian art to benefit Ukrainian children displaced by the war.[17] She became an Ambassador of Ukraine's official fundraising platformUnited24 in the Education and Science direction in May.[18]
Sakhno avoids playing Russian characters, as she said in 2024, and during theCOVID-19 lockdowns period, she broke a contract withNetflix that would have required her to portray a person with aSoviet Russia background.[19][20]
