Ivan Schranz (born 13 September 1993) is a Slovak professionalfootballer who plays as aforward orwinger forCzech First League clubSlavia Prague and theSlovakia national team.[2][3]

Schranz finished as thejoint-top scorer of theUEFA European Championship in2024 with three goals, as his nation reached the last 16.

Club career

Petržalka and Trnava

Having started his club career in theSlovak Second League atPetržalka, where he played for a year and a half, Schranz joinedSpartak Trnava at the age of 18 in January 2012.[4] He made his league debut againstBanská Bystrica on 5 May of the same year.[5] Schranz also made hisEuropean competition debut and in July 2014 scored twice in aUEFA Europa League qualifier againstScottish Premiership clubSt Johnstone.[6][7] In the middle of the 2014–15 season Schranz headed to Czech sideSparta Prague on loan, but made no league appearances for the side before returning to Trnava.[8] He continued to play for Trnava until the end of the 2016–17 season, playing 125 matches and scoring 25 goals overall.[9]

Czech arrival

Schranz returned to the Czech Republic, joiningDukla Prague in summer 2017.[10] He scored 8 goals in 40 appearances for Dukla, leaving the club mid-way through his second season after losing his place in the starting lineup. Schranz played in Cyprus forAEL Limassol in spring 2019, where he played seven matches for the club without scoring. He then returned to theCzech First League, signing a year-long contract withČeské Budějovice.[9] After good results, Schranz signed a three-year contract withJablonec in July 2020.[11] He continued his good form from the previous season, scoring 13 goals in 28 league games for Jablonec.[6]

Slavia Prague

On 31 May 2021, Schranz joinedSlavia Prague on a long-term contract in advance of the2021–22 season.[6] The same year on 30 July, in only his second match for Slavia, Schranz scored a hat-trick in a league win overTeplice.[12]

International career

On 4 September 2020, Schranz debuted for the seniorSlovakia national team in a 3–1 loss against theCzech Republic at the2020–21 UEFA Nations League, where he also scored his first goal.[13]

In May 2021, Schranz was included in Slovakia's final squad for the rescheduledUEFA Euro 2020 tournament,[6] but did not make an appearance.[14]

Euro 2024

In June 2024, Schranz was called up to represent Slovakia atUEFA Euro 2024.[15] He scored the only goal of their opening match as they achieved an upset 1–0 victory overBelgium.[16] He scored again in a 2–1 loss toUkraine in their second match, making him the first ever Slovak player to score more than one goal at the UEFA European Championship.[17] Schranz scored his third goal of the tournament in the round of 16 match againstEngland. His first-half goal put Slovakia 1–0 up, a lead they held for most of the match, although England equalised in injury time and subsequently scored again inextra time for a 2–1 England win, sending Slovakia out of the tournament.[18] His three goals at the tournament earned him the golden boot award, alongside five other players.[19]
