Ivan Mykolayovych Bobersky[a] (Ukrainian:Іван Миколайович Боберський; 14 August 1873 – 17 August 1947), was a Ukrainian teacher and theorist who played a key role in promoting Ukrainian nationalphysical culture.
Born into aGreek Catholic priest's family in a village in theGalicia region, Bobersky graduated from theUniversity of Lviv in 1895 and later pursued further studies atGraz University.[1] In 1901, he became a lecturer at theLviv Academic Gymnasium.[2] He contributed significantly to the creation ofPlast, the largest scouting organization in Ukraine, and was the one who coined its name.[3] From 1906 to 1914, he served as chairman of theSokil-Batko Society.[4]
DuringWorld War I, Bobersky acted as the treasurer of theUkrainian Sich Riflemen (1914–1918) and later headed the military press department of theState Secretariat of theWest Ukrainian People's Republic (ZUNR).[1] In 1920, he was appointed the plenipotentiary representative of the ZUNR government in theUnited States andCanada.[1]
Bobersky was the first to introduce Ukrainian sportsterminology, which was widely adopted inWestern Ukraine and remained in use until 1939.[1] From 1932, he resided inTržič,Yugoslavia, where he lived until his death in 1947.[1]
