Itta ofMetz,O.S.B. (alsoIda,Itte orIduberga; 592–8 May 652) was the wife ofPepin of Landen,Mayor of the Palace of the Kingdom ofAustrasia. After his death, she founded theAbbey of Nivelles, where she became aColombaniannun along with her daughter,Gertrude of Nivelles. Both are honored assaints by the Catholic Church.

Life

[edit]

There is no direct record of her parents, but it has been suggested that she came from a family ofsenatorial status which had originated inAquitaine,[1] and was a daughter ofArnoald,Bishop of Metz, son ofAnsbertus. Her brother wasSaint Modoald,Bishop of Trier, and her sister was theabbess, Saint Severa.

She marriedPepin of Landen,Mayor of the Merovingian Royal Palace.[2] After Pepin's death in 640, Itta and her daughter, Gertrude, withdrew from the capital for a life of religious reflection.[1] Later, around 647, on the advice ofAmandus, theBishop of Maastricht, she founded theAbbey of Nivelles. The abbey was originally just a community of nuns, but it later became adouble monastery when the nuns were joined by a group of Irish monks who offered them support in the operations of the abbey. She might have appointed her daughter,Gertrude, as its firstabbess, while she herself lived there as a simplenun, assisting the young abbess by her advice.[3]

Itta died at the abbey on 8 May 652.[3]

Children

[edit]

Itta had another daughter by Pepin, AbbessBegga of Andenne, who had marriedAnsegisel, son ofArnulf of Metz prior to joining the monastery.[1] By Begga, she is the grandmother ofPepin of Herstal and one of the matriarchs of the greatCarolingian family.

Her sons wereGrimoald, later Mayor of the Palace, and father of KingChildebert the Adopted; Itta's second sonBavo (or Allowin), became ahermit and was latercanonized. Both her daughters were also canonized, as was she. Herfeast day is celebrated on 8 May.[3]

Patronage
