Type of metamorphic rock

Itabirite, also calledbanded-quartzhematite orhematiteschist, is afoliated, metamorphosed oxide-faciesiron formation in which the originalchert orjasper bands have been recrystallized intomacroscopically distinguishable grains ofquartz and the iron is present as thin layers of hematite, magnetite, or martite (pseudomorphs of hematite after magnetite).[1]

The term was originally applied inItabirito (Pico de Itabirito), in the state ofMinas Gerais and southern part ofBelo Horizonte,Brazil, to a high-grade, massive specular hematite ore (66% iron) associated with aschistose rock composed of granular quartz and scaly hematite. The term is now widely used outside Brazil.[2]
