Istra (Russian:И́стра) is atown and theadministrative center ofIstrinsky District inMoscow Oblast,Russia, located on theIstra River, 40 kilometers (25 mi) west ofMoscow, on the Moscow–Riga railway. Population:35,111 (2010 census);[2]33,652 (2002 census);[6]35,046 (1989 Soviet census).[7] It was previously known asVoskresenskoye,Voskresensk (until 1930).

History

Known since the 16th century as the village of Voskresenskoye, it was acquired byPatriarch Nikon to serve the needs of the neighbouringVoskresensky (Resurrection) Monastery. By 1781, the village had grown into the town of Voskresensk and become the seat of anuyezd.[8]

In 1930, the town was renamed Istra (after the river which flows through it) in order to avoid the old name's religious connotations.[9] As a result of short-term occupation during theGreat Patriotic War (from November 25 to December 11, 1941), the town was severely damaged. After the war, Istra became a center of research in the area of electrical power engineering.

Administrative and municipal status

Within theframework of administrative divisions, Istra serves as theadministrative center ofIstrinsky District.[1] As an administrative division, it is, together with tworural localities, incorporated within Istrinsky District as theTown of Istra.[1] As amunicipal division, the Town of Istra is incorporated within Istrinsky Municipal District asIstra Urban Settlement.[3]

There is a large high voltage research center near Istra at55°55′26″N36°49′10″E / 55.92389°N 36.81944°E /55.92389; 36.81944 (research center).
