InGreek mythology,Ismenis (Ancient Greek: Ἰσμηνίς) was anaiadnymph, one of the daughters of theBoeotianriver godIsmenus:[1]Ismenis is apatronymic rather than a given name.
Given her parentage, Ismenis was probably the sister to other naiads:Dirce,[2]Strophia[3] andCrocale.[4] The youngerLinus, the music teacher ofHeracles, was possibly a brother of hers.[5]
InStatius'Thebaid, Ismenis was the mother, byPan, ofCrenaeus, a defender ofThebes in the war of theSeven against Thebes.[1]
When Crenaeus was killed byHippomedon whom he had challenged to single combat, Ismenis searched for his body which was carried away by the flow of River Ismenus, and, upon finding it, lamented her son's fate.[6]
