Isaac Hempstead Wright (born(1999-04-06)April 6, 1999[3]) is an English actor. He is best known for his role asBran Stark in theHBO television seriesGame of Thrones (2011–2019), which earned him aYoung Artist Award nomination asBest Young Supporting Actor in a TV Series. He also voiced Eggs in the 2014 animated filmThe Boxtrolls.[4]
Isaac Hempstead Wright was born inSurrey, England.[5] His mother and father are both teachers, and his step-father runs a printing company.[6] He studied atQueen Elizabeth's Grammar School,Faversham,Kent. He had no interest in acting until he joined a drama club to avoid playingfootball on Saturday mornings during the cold months of the year;[7] he later studied acting at the Kent Youth Theatre inCanterbury.[8]
Hempstead Wright began his acting career by auditioning and acting in commercials.[9]
Hempstead Wright's big break was asBran Stark in the hit television seriesGame of Thrones, which premiered in April 2011. He was part of the initial starring cast and remained a member of the starring cast for the second, third, and fourth seasons, which earned him twoScreen Actors Guild Awards nominations asOutstanding Performance by an Ensemble in Drama Series at the 18th and 20th Screen Actors Guild Awards.[10][11] He did not appear inSeason 5,[12] but returned as part of the main cast inseason 6.[13] The eighth and final season of the show premiered in April 2019, with Hempstead Wright in a starring role, making him one of a handful ofGame of Thrones actors who have remained on the show over its nine years of production.[14]
Hempstead Wright's film debut was as Tom Hill in the horror filmThe Awakening, which premiered in September 2011. Hempstead Wright also had a supporting role in the 2013crime thrillerClosed Circuit.[15] Hempstead Wright also voice acted in the 2014animated fantasy-comedy film,The Boxtrolls, a 2014 episode of the American showFamily Guy,[16] and Part 2 of the 2016 TV specialRevolting Rhymes.[17]
Hempstead Wright appears in theFoals song "Exits" music video. Directed by Albert Moya, it also features French actressChrista Théret as students at a clandestinefencing academy in a random series of interconnected vignettes of asurrealist nature. The video was filmed inBudapest.[18]
In 2018, Hempstead Wright was cast in the feature filmThe Blue Mauritius. The heist movie was expected to begin filming inCape Town, South Africa in mid-2018 but has remained in pre-production. As of 2021, he is still attached to the project.[19][20]
In April 2019, it was announced that Hempstead Wright was attached to the upcomingsci-fi filmVoyagers as part of an ensemble cast which includesColin Farrell andTye Sheridan. The film was produced in 2019 and was released in April 2021.[21][22]
Beginning in 2017, Hempstead Wright was a student at theUniversity of Birmingham until dropping out early in order to focus on his acting career.[23] In 2019, he returned to university to studyneuroscience atUniversity College London, saying that he intended to continue to act while doing so.[1][2] He earned aBSc in neuroscience, and later authored a paper on "oculomotor changes inProgressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP)".[24]
In December 2019, Hempstead Wright, asecular humanist, became a patron of the humanist charityHumanists UK.[25]
On 24 October 2025, Hempstead Wright announced on Instagram that he had married.[26]
