Club career

[edit]

Corvinul Hunedoara

[edit]

Andone, nicknamed "Fălcosul", was born on 15 March 1960 inȘpălnaca, Romania, and at 14 years old, he simultaneously played basketball and football, with Carol Gal as his first football coach at Școala Sportivă Hunedoara.[2][3] At 16, he decided to concentrate exclusively on his football career when he went toCorvinul Hunedoara's youth center where he was coached by Dumitru Pătrașcu.[2][3] On 7 March 1979, Andone made hisDivizia A debut for Corvinul when coachMircea Lucescu sent him to replaceRadu Nunweiller in the last 20 minutes of a 2–0 away loss toSportul Studențesc București.[4][5] At the end of his first season at Corvinul, the club was relegated toDivizia B, but Andone stayed with the club, helping it get promoted back to the first division after one year.[4] Afterwards, he helped the club finish third in the1981–82 Divizia A.[4] He also appeared in four games in the1982–83 UEFA Cup as they got pastGrazer AK in the first round, being eliminated in the following one byFK Sarajevo, Andone scoring a goal against each of them.[2][4][6]

In the summer of 1983, Andone and teammateMircea Rednic were transferred from Corvinul toDinamo București in exchange for five players, includingNicușor Vlad,Teofil Stredie andFlorea Văetuș.[2][4] In hisfirst season spent withThe Red Dogs, he helped the club winThe Double, coachNicolae Dumitru using him in 24 league games in which he scored one goal and he played the entire match in the 2–1 victory overrivalsSteaua București in theCupa României final.[2][7][8] Andone also appeared in six matches in the1983–84 European Cup, the club eliminating title holdersHamburg in the campaign, reaching the semi-finals where they were defeated byLiverpool.[2][9] He would reunite at Dinamo with his former coach from Corvinul, Mircea Lucescu.[2][10] Their first performance was the winning of the1985–86 Cupa României where in thefinal he played the entire match, which ended with a 1–0 win against Steaua, who had recently won theEuropean Cup.[10]

He was in the center of a big scandal in thederby against Steaua in March 1989, which was lost 2–1 afterGheorghe Hagi opened the score, Andone equalized for Dinamo andGabi Balint scored the winning goal for Steaua in the last minute of the game.[2][11] Furthermore, refereeIon Crăciunescu eliminatedRodion Cămătaru andClaudiu Vaișcovici from Dinamo.[2][11] Feeling disadvantaged by the referee, right after the game, Andone and Rednic showed some obscene gestures in front of the official tribune whereValentin Ceaușescu, the son of dictatorNicolae Ceaușescu and unofficial president of Steaua was staying.[2][11] Initially, theRomanian Football Federation suspended Andone for one year, but after his friend from Steaua,Marius Lăcătuș, talked to Valentin Ceaușescu and convinced him to forgive Andone, his suspension was reduced to three months.[2][11] Rednic also got away with it after a friend of his from Steaua,László Bölöni, talked to Valentin Ceaușescu.[11]

Afterwards, he played five games and scored one goal againstKuusysi Lahti in the1988–89 European Cup Winners' Cup, reaching the quarter-finals where they were eliminated on theaway goals rule after 1–1 on aggregate bySampdoria.[4][12] In thefollowing season he won another Double with the club, Lucescu giving him 20 appearances in which he scored two goals in the league, and also played the full 90 minutes in the 6–4 win over Steaua in theCupa României final.[2][4][7][13] In the same season he made another European performance as he played eight games in the1989–90 European Cup Winners' Cup, the team reaching the semi-finals where they were eliminated after 2–0 on aggregate byAnderlecht.[2][4][14] On 9 May 1990, Andone made his last Divizia A appearance in Dinamo's 2–2 draw againstFC Brașov, having a total of 255 matches with 35 goals in the competition, also totaling 29 games with three goals in European competitions.[4]
