Innocent Gizel (Russian:Иннокентий (Гизель),romanized: Innokenty (Gizel);c. 1600 – November 18, 1683) was aPrussian-born historian, writer, and political and ecclesiastic figure.[1] He adoptedOrthodox Christianity and made a substantial contribution toRussian andUkrainian culture.
Innocent Gizel was arector of theKievan Theological School. In 1656, he was appointedarchmandrite of theKiev Pechersk Lavra. Innocent Gizel is known to have supported the unification ofUkraine andRussia andautonomy of the Kievclergy, simultaneously. Innokentiy Gizel is generally credited for writing theSynopsis in 1674, but some researchers reject his authorship.
