Mankind had defeatedThe Undertaker in aBoiler Room Brawl atSummerSlam the prior month when The Undertaker's long-time managerPaul Bearer betrayed him and aligned himself with Mankind. Mankind subsequently issued a challenge toWWF ChampionShawn Michaels.[7]
The opening bout, which aired on theWWF Free for All broadcast, was asingles match in whichSavio Vega defeatedMarty Jannetty. After the match, Vega was attacked byJustin Bradshaw.[8][3]
After the opening bout,Vince McMahon,Jim Ross, andMr. Perfect welcomed viewers to the pay-per-view.[8][3]

The second bout, and the first to air on the pay-per-view proper, was aCaribbean strap match between Bradshaw and Vega. This was Bradshaw's first pay-per-view match in the WWF. During the match, two wrestlers from the localExtreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) promotion,Tommy Dreamer andThe Sandman, along with ECW promoterPaul Heyman, were shown at ringside, getting involved in the match before being thrown out of the CoreStates Center; this marked the beginning of the working relationship between the WWF and ECW. The match was won by Vega after he surreptitiously touched three corners of the ring and then was thrown into the fourth corner by Bradshaw, who inadvertently cost himself the match.[8][3][1][5]
After the second bout, Vega was attacked in the locker room byDiesel andRazor Ramon, who Jim Ross had claimed would return to the WWF after having departed forWorld Championship Wrestling earlier that year (in reality, the characters of Diesel and Razor Ramon had been recast with new wrestlers portraying them).[8][3]
The third bout was a singles match betweenJim Cornette andJosé Lothario in an extension of the feud betweenShawn Michaels (managed by Lothario) andVader (managed by Cornette). Lothario won a shortsquash, pinning Cornette following a series ofpunches.[8][3]
Following the third bout,Brian Pillman - who had claimed onRaw that he would interviewBret Hart (who had been largely absent sinceWrestleMania XII in March 1996) at the pay-per-view - instead introduced Owen Hart andStone Cold Steve Austin, both of whom mocked Bret Hart.[8][3]

Another vignette then aired in whichClarence Mason tricked a disorientated Jim Cornette into signing over the contracts ofBritish Bulldog andOwen Hart to Mason.
The fourth bout was atag team match in which theSmoking Gunns defended theWWF Tag Team Championship againstOwen Hart and the British Bulldog. Prior to the match, the Smoking Gunns' manager,Sunny, unveiled a large poster of herself, only to find that the poster had been defaced by Bulldog and Hart. The match ended when Michaels used hisSweet Chin Music finishing move to drive a chair into Mankind's face and then attempted to pin Mankind, only for Vader to interfere and attack Michaels, resulting in Mankind being disqualified.
