Imbas forosnai, is a gift ofclairvoyance or visionary ability practised by the gifted poets of ancientIreland.[1]
InOld Irish,Imbas imeans "inspiration," and specifically refers to the sacredpoetic inspiration believed to be possessed by thefili (Old Irish: inspired, visionary poets) in EarlyIreland.Forosnai means "illuminated" or "that which illuminates". Descriptions of the practices associated withImbas forosnai are found inCormac's Glossary and in the mythology associated with the heroFionn mac Cumhaill. In theTáin Bó Cúailgne, the woman poet Fedelm uses herimbas forosnai to predict the outcome of a battle.[2]Imbas forosnai involved the practitioner engaging in sensory deprivation techniques in order to enter a trance and receive answers or prophecy.
