Muhammad Ilyas Attar Qadri[a] (born 1950) is aPakistaniIslamic scholar who is the leader ofDawat-e-Islami since its foundation. He belongs to theQadri–Razavi order ofSufism.

AKutchi Memon, Qadri was born inKarachi and studied underZiauddin Madani andMuhammad Waqaruddin Qadri at Darul Uloom Amjadia.

His Dawat-e-Islami is a non-political global organization ofBarelviSunnis spread over 195+ countries.[2][1][3][4][5][6] He has around 30 million disciples all over the world.[1][7][8]

Early life and education

HisKutchi Memon ancestors originated from the village of Kutyanah inJunagarh, Gujarat, India. His father held various positions at the Hanafi Memon Mosque in Pakistan for an extended period. Following the establishment of Pakistan, his parents relocated to the country, initially settling inHyderabad, Sindh before eventually moving toKarachi.[9]

Ilyas Qadri was born on July 12, 1950, in Karachi.[1] His father, Abdur Rahman Qadri, was commonly referred to with the title "Haji" due to his purported passing while undertaking thehajj pilgrimage.[10]

Qadri pursued his studies for approximately 22 years under the tutelage of the esteemed scholarMuhammad Waqaruddin Qadri at Darul Uloom Amjadia in Karachi.[11]

Dawat-e-Islami

Dawat-e-Islami has contributed towards the promotion of Islamiceducation. It has establishedmadrasas where children and adults learn and memorize theQuran, andJamia-tul-Madina where theDars-e-Nizami curriculum is taught.

Dawat-e-Islami has departments includingIslamic Jurisprudence,Madani Channel, Madrasa tul Madinah,Jamia-tul-Madina, Departments ofMosque Service, Madani Inamat andMadani Qafila.[9]

Sufism

Ilyas Qadri became amurid ofZiauddin Madani, himself a disciple ofAhmad Raza Khan.Fazlur Rahman Malik andWaqaruddin also authorized him in Sufism.Shariful Haq Amjadi authorized him in all the four major Sufi orders,Qadiriyyah,Chishtiyyah,Naqshbandiyyah, andSuhrawardiyya. Amjadi also gave himijazah to transmitahadith.[9]

Criticism

  1. Sectarian Divisions and Extremism:
    • Ilyas Qadri has facedallegations related toextremism and controversial statements. These include supporting extrajudicial killings of blasphemers. His affiliation with individuals involved in violent incidents, has raised concerns.
