Iker Romero Fernández (born 15 June 1980) is a retiredSpanishhandball player, currently working as the head coach ofSG BBM Bietigheim.
He won theWorld Men's Handball Championship in2005 with theSpain men's national handball team inTunisia.
Iker Romero signed his first professional contract in 1997 withBM Valladolid. In 2000 he signed forAdemar León, where he won the Spanish Championship in 2001. The same year he signed forBM Ciudad Real. Here he won the 2003Copa del Rey and the 2002 and 2003EHF Cup Winners' Cup. In 2003 he signed forFC Barcelona, where he won the 2006 and 2007 Spanish Championship, the 2004 Copa del Rey, the 2004 and 2007 European Supercup and the 2005 and 2011EHF Champions League.
In 2011 he moved to Germany to joinFüchse Berlin, where he won the 2013-14DHB-Pokal and the 2014-15EHF European League. In April 2014 he announced that he would retire at the end of season and move back to Spain,[1] but he decided to stay for one more year in Berlin before retiring.[2][3]
In 2017 he became the assistant coach at the GermanHandball-Bundesliga clubTSV Hannover-Burgdorf.[4]
From the 2021-22 season he became the head coach ofSG BBM Bietigheim.[5]
He is married to the German handball playerLaura Steinbach.[6]
