Igbo rap is a Nigerian style ofhip hop music that originated in theIgbo-dominated southeastern region ofNigeria and has become more popular since 2000. The style draws its main influences fromIgbo traditional music andAfrican American music. Aside otherderived styles, it can be combined withhighlife,R&B andafro-soul.[1] Most artists and groups who perform Igbo rap usually deliver their lyrics in theIgbo language, although on some occasions, Igbo is blended withPidgin English.[1]
Early pioneers in the scene includeMr Raw,MC Loph, and2Shotz. Today, many musical acts likePhyno,Ugoccie,Zoro, andJeriq are considered Igbo rap artists.[2][3][4][5][6][1]
