Ibn Bibi was aPersian[1] historiographer and the author of the primary source for the history of theSeljuq Sultanate of Rum during the 13th century.[2] He served as head of the chancellery of the Sultanate inKonya and reported on contemporary events. His best known book isSelçukname.
Ibn Bibi’s father, a native ofGorgan, lived for a time at the court of theJalal al-Din Kwarezmshah and later worked at the Seljuq chancellery.[citation needed] His mother,Bi Bi Monajemeh Nishaburi, was a famous astrologer fromNishapur invited to Konya byKayqubad I.[citation needed] The family was part of an exodus of Persian intellectuals fromMongol-dominatedIran.[citation needed]
Ibn Bibi’s memoir is written inPersian and covers the period between 1192 and 1280.[3] A single manuscript, produced forKaykhusraw III, survives inIstanbul (Aya Sofya 2985). An abridged Persian version calledMukhtaṣar was produced during the author's lifetime in 1284-85. AnOttoman Turkish adaptation, sometimes called theSeljukname, is included in theOğuzname of the early 15th century court historianYazicioğlu Ali. Several manuscripts of the latter survive inAnkara,Berlin,Istanbul,Leiden,St Petersburg,Moscow, andParis.[citation needed]
