Sir Ian Alexander McGregor (26 August 1922 – 1 February 2007) was a Scottishmalariologist.
McGregor was born inCambuslang,Lanarkshire, Scotland.[1] His father was a tailor, his mother a housewife.[2]
He was educated atRutherglen Academy, then studied medicine atSt Mungo's College andGlasgow Royal Infirmary.[2]
He became interested in and studiedmalaria while undertakingNational Service with theRoyal Army Medical Corps inPalestine,[3] undergoing training inmalariology at theMiddle East School of Hygiene atDimra.[2]
In 1949, he was sent toThe Gambia as a member of theMedical Research Council's Human Nutrition Research Unit,[3] and was appointed Director of the MRC's Gambian Field Station atFajara in 1954.[3]
In 1980, he returned to the United Kingdom, asvisiting professor at theLiverpool School of Tropical Medicine.[3]
He was awarded theDarling Foundation Medal in 1974,[1] elected aFellow of the Royal Society in 1981[4] and aFellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and was made anOfficer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the1959 New Year Honours;[5] aCommander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the1968 Birthday Honours;[6] and aKnight Bachelor in the1982 Birthday Honours, "for services to Tropical Medicine".[7]
He served on severalWorld Health Organization committees on malaria.[2]
He died atHomington, Wiltshire[1] in 2007.[2]
